"Racines Coréennes" is an association which was created to become a meeting place, allowing the discovery of Korea and its culture.

Who founded "Racines Coréennes" ?

"Racines Coréennes" is a non-profit association, without any political, religious or ideological tendency. It was created in February 1995 by a group of young French people, either adopted or simply interested in Korea, eager to share their experience with other adopted boys and girls born in the same country.

The founder members : At first, it was a group of young people having all in common their interest for Korea and for adoption. When the association was created, all members had already been or had returned at least once to Korea. These founders are: Yolaine CELLIER, Marie FRANVILLE, Guillaume GOULLIN and Karine GRIJOL.

The memorandum and articles of the association were registered by the Prefecture of Paris on February 6, 1995. The legal statement of the association was published in the "Official Journal" of the French Republic dated March 8, 1995 (act n°1920).

Purpose of the association :

Our association has a humanitarian and cultural character. It aims to favor the meeting between the Koreans adopted in France, and to promote sociocultural exchanges between French and Korean youth mainly, without excluding the other nationalities.

Vocation of the association :
Top

Being adopted may cause problems of identity, all the more when you were born in a foreign country like Korea, so underestimated in France. The simple fact of knowing that there are other people in the same position, who can easily be contacted, may reassure and thus may help finding answers to one’s questions.

"Racines Coréennes" is above all a meeting place for the young people sharing the same little common fate, that is to say the same birthplace and the same status of adopted children in France. Our role is also to offer to the young people of Korean origin the opportunity to get acquainted with their native country, its customs, its traditions, even its language, so different from that of France.

Finally, our association simply wants to be a place of cultural exchanges between French and Korean youth. We think that no one but the adopted youth themselves can achieve this goal. Therefore, in reason of their particular status, the young adopted French people seem to be predestined to be the best link possible between the two countries.

Activities of the association :

"Racines Coréennes" tries to organize regular activities allowing its members to keep contact and to know Korea better and better. The association proposes various activities of which one annual conference at the Senate (where subjects relating to adoption are debated) and one Summer School in Korea. The association also proposes many festive celebrations (parties, Sollal - Korean New Year) or cultural events (classic music concerts, dance performances and Korean traditional music concerts, introductory courses to the Korean language, etc.).

Every last Sunday of the month, members meet in a Parisian Korean restaurant. It is the occasion to eat Korean but also to discuss around a table.

HAMKAE journal :

This magazine, "Hamkae" (which means "group" in Korean), allows us to communicate with all our members and especially those who live in province. That is why its purpose is not only to bring information about the association but also to guide our members in the discovery of the Korean culture and to inform them about the current events.

The journal is published every quarter and is divided into several columns as diverse as :

  • Current events / History
  • Culture
  • Glances
  • Cooking
  • To discover
  • Tradition
  • Language
  • Exchanges
  • To see and to know

A monthly news bulletin also exists : "Kim'chi". Its purpose is to inform the members of activities to come.

About the yearly Conference :
Top

Since 1996, every autumn, "Racines Coréennes" stages a conference in the Palace of Luxemburg for all its members, the adopted ones as well as their adoptive parents or anyone interested in adoption. A general debate relating to the issues of adoption is held with a new and different approach each year. The peculiarity of these conferences lies in the fact that they are organized by the adopted young people themselves. Debates deal with the way young adopted people live their adoption and the feelings of their adoptive parents too. We study all the subjects relating to international adoption, especially the notions of family, identity, integration. At the same time, different personalities (people responsible for adoption associations, psychologists, academics…), come and demonstrate their competence, explain their research work, which represent the starting point and basis of our own reflections about what it is to be a French adopted Korean.

Summer School :
Top

"Racines Coréennes" allows French of Korean origin who still do not know their native country to participate in governmental programs. These programs contain courses of language, civilization, history and are also completed by visits of historic sites or places with a high cultural interest . Beyond the return to motherland, they allow rich discoveries and favor open-mindedness face to a 5000 year old country ill- known by the rest of the world, inhabited by welcoming and often charming people.

There are today 4 types of program :

  • Holt International Summer School.
  • Chonbuk National University Summer School.
  • Y.W.C.A. ( Young Women Christian Association) organizes for the Koreans girls adopted abroad with more than 18 years, a program which aims to present to the young people Korea under a tourist and cultural aspect. (Registration in January for summer - limited places)
  • Monastic or charitable communities.
